Sunamganj: Employees of Lafarge Surma Cement Limited (LSC) carried out a three-day tree plantation drive in Chhatak upazila recently.
This initiative was undertaken as part of Lafarge’s efforts to engage employees in volunteering activities for the welfare of the society and environment, said a press release on Wednesday.
Around 200 employees of the plat actively planted 1,000 trees during this three-day campaign.
Tarek Elba, CEO of LSC, formally inaugurated the campaign by planting a tree on the link road by the plant. Chhatak municipality mayor Kalam Chowdhury was present as the guest of honor.
At the inaugural program Tarek Elba said, “As part of Lafarge’s Sustainable Ambitions 2020, every Lafarge employee will now have to dedicate a portion of their time every year for volunteering activities in locally beneficial projects.”
“Lafarge has set a target of contributing 1 million volunteer hours per year by 2020. We’ve decided to contri-bute 1,500 volunteering hours in 2014,” he added.
Director (operation) of LSC Asim Chattopadhyay, local ward councilors and schoolchildren also participated in the tree plantation program.
