Robber’ ringleader killed in ‘shootout’

Noakhali: The ringleader of a robber gang was killed in a ‘shootout’ with police in Brickfield area beside Palla Road in Chatkhil upazila early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Khorshed Alam, 42, a resident of Badalkot village of the same upazila.
Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chatkhil Police Station, said on secret information, a team of Chatkhil thana police conducted a drive in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj district and arrested Khorshed on Monday.
He was wanted in 29 cases, including for murder, robbery and extortion, added the OC.
Later, he was taken to Noakhali on Monday night.
After interrogation, police along with Khorshed conducted a drive in Brickfield area for recovering firearms at about 2.00 am on Wednesday.
Sensing presence of the police, associates of Khorshed opened fire at the law enforcers, prompting the latter to fire back, triggering a gunfight.
Khorshed was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot.
Four policemen-- sub-inspectors Khalilur Rahman and Emdad Hossain and constables Khaled and Abul Kalam-- were also injured during the gunfight.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Noakhali Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Police also recovered a foreign pistol, a rifle and a machete from the spot.
