Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested six members of an organized kidnapping gang from the city’s Mirpur area on Tuesday.
The detectives recovered one wireless set, one handcuff, and one digital camera from their possession.
The arrestees are Md Abu Taleb, 68, Md Azahar Uddin Khan, 42, Mustafa, 40, Md Shamim Sikder, 25, Dola Akhter, 20, and Dola’s aunty Salma Begum, 45.
Acting on a tip-off, a special team of DB police led by AC Rahmatullah Chowdhury conducted a drive in a house at Pikepara under Mirpur Police station at about 4:30 pm and arrested the gang members.
Briefing reporters at DMP media centre Wednesday noon, Deputy Commissioner (DB) Krisna Pado Roy said the gangsters were involved in cheating people through various ways. They abducted people identifying themselves as DB police and then demanded ransom, he said.
DB officials said the gang members picked up a London expatriate from in front of Mirpur BRTA office on August 26 in 2013 . They took some obscene photos of the expatriate man with Dola forcibly and later, released him after collecting Tk 24 lakh as ransom.
On February 20 this year, the gang allured a high government official using Dola and picked him up. They realised Tk 17 lakh as ransom for his release.
Recently, the same group picked up a political leader in the same way. On information, DB members rescued the political leader but the gangsters managed to flee the scene.
Later, the DB members arrested the six gang members following information from the rescued political leader.
Two separate cases were filed with Mirpur police station in this connection.
