Chittagong: A grocery shop owner was shot dead by miscreants at Uzanipara village in Banshkhali upazila on Monday night presumably as he protested against stalking of his cousins by some local young men.

The deceased was identified as Fazlul Qader Manik, 27, son of Noor Ahmed of the village.

Locals said Manik came under an attack by the miscreants while he was returning home from Purba Chambal Bazar around 11:00

The attackers opened fire at him from a point-blank range, leaving him injured.

Critically injured, Manik was first taken to Banshkhali Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

Manik died at CMCH around 2:00am, CMCH police camp sources said.

Local people said Manik protested as some young men teased his cousins in a local fair in Purba Chambal area on Sunday.

The stalkers might have killed Manik over the issue, they alleged.
