Laxmipur: A ward-level Awami League leader who was beaten allegedly by some Jubo Dal men over establishing supremacy at Sondara village in Ramganj upazila on Friday died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the capital early Saturday.
The victim was identified as Jahangir Alam, member secretary of 6 no ward of Ichapur union unit of Awami League and son of late Dudu Miah of the village.
Police said local Jubo Dal leader Mahbubu Rahman, its activist Siraj Uddin and Abdur Rahman swooped on Jahangir while gossiping in a tea stall in Sondara following enmity over establishing dominion in the area.
The attackers beat up the AL leader mercilessly, leaving him seriously injured.
Injured Jahangir was admitted to Ramganj Upazila Health Complex from where he was shifted to Noakhali General Hospital.
As his condition deteriorated, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for better treatment where he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Saturday.
Officer-in-charge of Ramganj Police Station M Lokman Hossain confirmed the incident saying that they are conducting drives to arrest those involved in the killing.
