Interns at Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital went on an indefinite strike on Sunday protesting the suspension of one of their colleagues for assaulting a nurse, disrupting medical services at this public hospital.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the interns this noon, said Iftekhar Amin, an intern of the hospital.
The authorities concerned of the hospital suspended Rafiqul Islam, an intern, without giving him any scope of self-defence, said Amin.
Earlier in the day, the nurses of the hospital observed a five-hour work abstention protesting assault on one of their colleagues by the intern, causing sufferings to its patients.
Sources at the hospital said Rafiqul Islam Sujon had an altercation with Bakul Rani Das, a senior staff nurse, on Saturday morning.
At one stage, Rafiqul physically assaulted Bakul Rani Das around 11 am on Saturday.
Protesting the incident and demanding punishment to the intern, the nurses of the hospital went on work abstention on Saturday morning.
Contacted, Brigadier General Zakir Hossain, director of the hospital, said the accused intern was suspended following the complaint by the nurses on Sunday. He also requested the nurses to go back to their work.
The striking nurses, however, postponed their program till Thursday following his request.
