A tribunal here on Monday sentenced a man to death and seven people to different jail terms for killing a schoolboy in Netrakona in 2011.
Judge of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 ABM Sajedur Rahman pronounced the verdict in the presence of all the convicts.
The condemned convict is Mokhlesur Rahman of Naupara village in Kendua upazila of Netrakona district.
Of the rest convicts, five -- Habibur Rahman Bakul, a teacher of Naupara High School, Matiur Rahman Moti, Rahim Miah, Mosharraf Hossain and Afzal Hossain -- were sentenced to life imprisonment while the two others -- Lutfur Rahman Hridyoy and Jahangir Alam Titu -- to 10 years’ imprisonment.
The tribunal fined the lifers Tk 20,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more in prison.
According to the prosecution, Mokhlesur Rahman, a maternal cousin of Sanju Rahman, father of victim Mizanur Rahman Babu, along with Habibur Rahman Bakul and his brother Matiur Rahman had masterminded the killing of Babu following an enmity over the managing committee of Naupara High School.
Later, the convicts killed Babu, a Class-VII student of Naupara High School, by slitting his throat at Baura Haor in the upazila on October 15, 2011.
Victim’s father Sanju Rahman had filed a murder case with Kendua Police Station the following day.
Mohammad Abu Hanif, sub-inspector of Kendua Police Station and investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge-sheet against them on November 30, 2011.
