The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has revoked the freedom fighter certificates of five senior government officials following recommendations by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) for collecting those without following due procedures just ahead of their retirement.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Freedom Fighters’ Council led by Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque on Sunday at city’s Moghbazar.
The five officials are- Health Secretary Niaz Uddin Bhuiyan, former Liberation War Affairs secretary, now OSD, KH Masud Siddiqui, joint secretary, now OSD, Abul Quasem Talukdar, former Science and Technology secretary, now the Public Service Commission secretary AKM Amir Hossain and former secretary to PMO Molla Waheeduzzaman, now chairman of the Privatization Commission.
“The ministry has cancelled the FF certificates of the five secretaries as they didn’t apply to the National Freedom Fighters’ Council for obtaining their FF certificates,” said Minister while talking to reporters after the meeting.
What punishment these officials will face for such extreme corruption done by them is not yet announced by the government.
On September 8, the ACC officially sought cancellation of freedom fighter certificates of the five senior government officials who arranged the recognition for themselves prior to their retirement, intending to avail themselves of various benefits earmarked for those who had joined the Liberation War.
In January 2014, the ACC launched a probe against six top government officials based on allegations that they took FF certificates as they came close to their retirement and get the job extension facility.
Out of the six government officials who were under ACC scanner, a probe found that Housing and Public Works secretary Dr Khondakar Showkat Hossain was a genuine freedom fighter.
However, Molla Waheeduzzaman will get the scope for appeal against the decision as he applied for the certificate to the National Freedom Fighters’ Council.
“He (Molla) can file an appeal petition as he applied for the certificate to the National Freedom Fighters’ Council. A positive report was submitted following his application. But he didn’t take the last approval of the council. So, it has been decided to cancel his certificate,” Liberation War Affairs Ministry source said.
