Sirajganj: A young man was killed and 35 others were injured in a clash between two groups of people over establishing supremacy in the municipality area on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Imran Hossain, 20, son of Iqbal Hasan Kunnu, a resident of Soyagobinda area of the town.
Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Habibul Islam said the people of Diardhangora and Soyagobinda areas had long been at loggerheads over establishing control over the town.
Equipped with various sharp weapons, the two groups fought a pitched battle at about 10:00 am.
At one stage, the resident of Diardhangora area stabbed Imran while he was returning home, leaving him seriously injured. Imran was taken to Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Informed, police rushed to the spot and fired over 100 rounds of teargas shells and rubber bullets to control the situation.
The injured were admitted to different hospitals and clinics.
Meanwhile, police arrested six people in connection with the violence.
Additional police have been deployed in the areas to fend off further trouble.
