Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said her government is arranging various competitions for the country’s children in a way so that they can create world records with their elegant performance in various international events.
“World-class players will come out through national-level school and madrasah sports competitions and they’ll bring laurels for the country,” she said while addressing the closing ceremony of the 43rd Summer National School and Madrasah Sports Competition at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city.
The Prime Minister said different competitions, including sports, cultural and literary ones, can help enhance physical and mental strength of people.
She said the present government wants those who got prizes today in the competition to groom themselves up to play a pioneer role in all domestic and international competitions.
She underscored the need for the regular participation of children in games and sports along with their academic activities to build themselves as worthy citizens and future leaders of the country.
Hasina said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had constituted Bangladesh National School and Madrasah Sports Samity soon after the country’s independence for the development of games and sports and he was its chief patron.
Bangabandhu had introduced the National School and Madrasah Sports Competition in 1972 which has now become a traditional sports competition in the country, she said.
The Prime Minister said her government has given this competition a new dimension through -titled ‘Summer and Winter’ - arranging it twice a year at different tires incorporating various seasonal sport events starting from upazila, district, divisional and national levels every year.
Extending thanks to all concerned for organizing such competition, Hasina congratulated the winning teams and players.
Earlier, the Prime Minister distributed prizes among the winning teams and players of the sports competition.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid also spoke on the occasion.
