State Minister for Labor and Employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu on Sunday said decision has been taken to pay readymade garment (RMG) workers’ festival bonus by September 28 while wages of the current month by October 2.
He said this while talking to reporters after the 26th meeting of the ‘Crisis Management Core Committee’ on the preparation for the two major festivals - Eid-ul-Azha and Durga Puja -- held at the ministry.
Representatives of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), workers’ unions, law enforcement agencies and deputy commissioners of the districts concerned were present at the meeting.
The State Minister said as the Eid-holiday will start from October 3, the condition has been set for the factory owners to pay the wages of the running month by October 2.
Industrial Police and as well as banks have been asked to cooperate with the owners regarding the transaction of money for the payments, he said.
He also noted that to avoid traffic congestion ahead of the Eid, workers’ holidays at different RMG areas will begin at different times.
Asked whether the government has taken any step to pay the dues to the Tuba Group workers, the junior minister said the government is persistently keeping contact with the owner of group and trying to ensure that at least some portion of the workers’ dues are paid to them before Eid.
If otherwise, legal steps will be taken against the owner, he added.
