Inflation slightly declines to 6.84%

The overall general Point to Point inflation rate slightly declined to 6.84 percent in September this year from 6.91 percent in the previous month (August).
“The general point-to-point inflation rate declined to 6.84 percent in September from 6.91 percent in August this year,” Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said on Tuesday.
He disclosed the figures while releasing the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) at a briefing at the NEC-1 in the city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan, Planning Division Secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam, Planning Commission members and BBS Director General Golam Mostafa Kamal were present at the briefing.
According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) data, the point-to-point food inflation rate in September this year declined to 7.63 percent from 7.67 percent in the previous month of August.
The point-to-point non-food inflation rate in September also declined to 5.63 percent from 5.76 percent in August.
The BBS data also showed that the general point-to-point inflation rate in September was 7.02 percent in urban areas while 6.75 percent in rural areas.
The general point-to-point inflation in August this year was 7.08 percent in urban areas and 6.83 percent in the rural areas.
The food inflation declined in rural areas in September this year to 7.52 percent, down from 7.56 percent in the previous month of August.
The non-food inflation in rural areas also declined to 5.31 percent in September compared to 5.46 percent in August this year.
In urban areas, the food inflation rate decreased to 7.88 percent in September from 7.89 percent in August this year.
The non-food inflation rate in urban areas also witnessed a downtrend in September as it stood at 6.07 percent as against 6.19 percent in August this year.
Besides, the national wage index rate witnessed a 10.62 percent growth in September this year with 8661.20, up from 8612.73 in August this year.
The average one year inflation rate from October 2013 to September 2014 also witnessed a downward trend to 7.22 percent compared to 7.37 percent during October 2012 to September 2013.
The Planning Minister said that the target of the government is to contain inflation rate within 6.5 percent in the current fiscal year.
