Stern action warned against illegal sand extractors
Staff Reporter Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sharif on Wednesday warned of stern action against the sand extractors involved in illegal sand lifting, which poses threat to biodiversity and the key structures around the areas. “Unplanned sand extraction is posing threat to homesteads, roads and highways, bridges and other important structures in the country. If the balance of environment is destroyed due to unplanned sand extraction, legal action will also be taken against the officials responsible for protecting environment,” he said. The Minister made the remarks at a meeting of the National Committee on Sand Estate and Soil Management held at the Secretariat. Sharif said a hydrographic survey should be carried out soon to resolve the complications in leasing out sand estates and asked the authorities concerned to carry out a hydrographic survey of all the rivers, haors and beels in the country. He also asked the authorities concerned to take technical assistance from the BIWTA and other bodies under the Shipping Ministry to find a way how sand could be extracted from rivers in dry season without disrupting its water flow. Senior Land Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam and chairman of Land Reforms Board Mahfuzur Rahman were, among others, present at the meeting.
