The High Court on Sunday granted bail to former Awami League MP Khan Tipu Sultan and his wife Jasmine Ara for four weeks in a case filed in connection with the killing of their daughter-in-law Dr Shamarukh Mehzabin.
An HC bench, comprising Justice Syed AB Mahmudul Huq and Justice Akram Hossain Chowdhury, passed the order after a hearing on a petition seeking bail upon their surrender.
Lawyer Nurul Islam Sujon, MP and Fazlul Haque Khan Farid stood for the petitioners while Deputy Attorney General Mohammad Bashirullah represented the state.
Earlier, Humayun Sultan Sadab, son of Tipu Sultan, took his wife Mehzabin, a physician of Holy Family Hospital, to the Dhanmondi Central Hospital in an unconscious state on Thursday where doctors declared her dead.
Police arrested Humayun from the city’s Dhanmondi area on charge of killing his wife on November 13.
Nurul Islam, father of the deceased, filed a murder case accusing Khan Tipu Sultan, his wife Dr Jasmine Ara Begum and their son Humayun.
According to the case records, Humayun used to torture his wife both mentally and physically.
Mehzabin had faced strong protest from her in-laws when she expressed her interest to appear in the 35th BCS examination.
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court on Sunday placed Humayun on a three-day remand when Dhanmondi Police Station sub-inspector Kazi Shariful Islam, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, produced Humayun before the court and sought a 10-day remand for him.
