Khagrachhari: Two members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) battalion-16 were killed and four others injured as a grenade went off during training in Khagrachhari Cantonment on Sunday.
The victims were identified as nayek subedar Abul Kashem, hailing from Chandina in Comilla, and sepoy Shikder Hasanur Rahman of Kashiani in Gupalganj.
Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station, said the grenade exploded at the cantonment around 11:40am when BGB members from the 16 battalion were receiving training at the firing range, killing the two on the spot and injuring four others.
The injured BGB men are medical officer of BGB 40 Battalion Captain Taiful Islam, nayek subedar Masud Rana, Lance Nayek Masirul Islam and Lance Nayek Siraj. They were airlifted to the Dhaka Combined Military Hospital (CMH).
Narrating the incident, BGB battalion-16 commander Lt Col Khaled Bin Yusuf told reporters that when Hasan tried to hurl the grenade as part of training, it exploded in his hand as he could not handle it properly.
Kashem suffered severe injuries as he was standing very close to Hasan during the training.
They were rushed to cantonment medical centre where on physicians pronounced them dead.
Contacted, Public Relations Officer of BGB Headquarters Mojsin Reza said the injured BGB men are now out of danger. “They’re now fine and out of danger,” he said quoting the physicians at the Dhaka CMH.
Postmortems of the two BGB men have already been completed. They will be sent to their respective village homes after Namaz-e-janaza at Ramgarh BGB battalion headquarters in the evening, Mohsin added.
