Modern projects against disaster under plan

Staff Reporter The government is interested in initiating modern projects focused on particular types of disasters, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya said on Tuesday. The minister said this while addressing a workshop titled ‘Disaster Recovery Planning’ at the city’s Cirdap auditorium. The workshop was jointly organized by the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry, International Recovery Platform (IRP) and Institute of Strategic Recovery Studies for Disaster Resilience and Research (ISRSDRR). The minister said, “Diverse natural calamities like flood, cyclone, river erosion, excessive rainfall take place throughout the year; so, a sustainable system to reduce the effect of these disasters is essential for Bangladesh.” He said the government is also concerned about fire and earthquake safety in the readymade garment (RMG) sector. Turning to earthquake apprehension, Maya noted that there is a record of strong earthquake happening in every 50-100 years in the region. Director General of Disaster Management Department Mohammad Abdul Wazed, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Disaster Management and Relief Ministry Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, Disaster Management Secretary Mesbah ul Alam and executive chairman of ISRSDRR Akram H Chowdhury also spoke on the occasion.
