10 held with arms in city
Staff Reporter Plain-clothes police in their separate drives in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday arrested 10 alleged criminals, including four muggers, from the city’s Rampura and Mugda areas. Members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) also recovered one pistol, three bullets, two stolen microbuses and a private car from their possession. Tipped off that a gang of robber was preparing for committing robbery, a special DB team, led by Assistant Commissioner Md Shahjahan, conducted a drive near Basar Tower under Mugda Police Station at about 11:05pm. The detectives arrested six alleged robbers -- Md Akhtar, Md Aftar Hossain, Md Hanif, Md Helal Matbbar, Md Sumon Ali Apple and Md Jewel Hossain -- during the drive. Two stolen microbuses, one foreign pistol, three bullets and three sharp weapons were also recovered from their possession. Briefing reporters at the DMP Media Centre on Monday, Joint Commissioner (DB) Monirul Islam said the arrested had long been involved in committing robbery in different parts of the capital using the microbuses. In a separate raid, another DB team, led by Inspector Mahbub-ur-Rashid, arrested four alleged muggers -- Riaj, Md Masud, Md Saiful Islam and Billal Hossain -- from East Rampura Niribili Gali at about 4:05 am. One private car, one magazine, three bullets and two machetes were recovered during the drive. DB Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam said the arrested muggers were involved in snatching the private car from in front of Falcon Tower under Tejgaon Police Station on September 30.
