4 killed, over 400 hurt in political clashes Over 200 held

Four people were killed and over 400 injured in clashes broke out across the country over the programs and counter-programs of the ruling and opposition parties marking the first anniversary of the January-5 national election.
Rakib and Raihan Hossain Rana-- two activists of pro-BNP Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD)-- were shot killed and 15 others injured during a clash with Awami League workers at Tebaria in the district town of Natore in the morning.
Mazid Uddin, 45, an activist of Solua union unit of BNP in Charghat upazila, was killed as police opened fire on a procession of BNP-led 20-party alliance at Baneshwar in Charghat upazila of Rajshahi district in the afternoon.
Besides, another BNP man - Jamsed Ali, 40-- was killed and 14 people were injured as law enforcers opened fire on a procession of the 20-party alliance at Kansat Bazar in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj.
In the capital, five vehicles were torched as clashes broke out between police and BNP activists at different parts of the capital.
Four police motorbikes and a bus were torched by miscreants following clashes between police and 20-arty men at DIT road and in Fakirapool area.
Fire service sources said miscreant set fire to a BNP office at Suritola in Old Dhaka which was doused by two fire-fighting units in the morning.
Miscreants set an Awami League office ablaze at Siddikbazar around 5:15 am.
Besides, crude bomb blasts, chase and counter-chase between police and BNP-Jamaat men were also reported from different areas of the city.
Police recovered 20 Molotov cocktails (petrol bombs) from a house in the city’s Swamibagh area in the morning.
Member of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested former ward councillors of Dhaka City Corporation and Lalbagh thana unit BNP leader Hazi Altaf Hossain along with 20 crude bombs from Lalbagh area in the morning.
Tipped off, a team of Rab-10 conducted a raid on a flat of 54 Jagannath Shaha Lane around 3:00 am and arrested Hazi Altaf Hossain along with the cocktails, said a Rab official.
Meanwhile, commuters underwent immense hassles due to the crisis of public and transport in the capital in the morning, amid the mounting tension over the rally of BNP-led 20-party alliance.
According to reports reaching the UNB news desk, over 400 people were injured and 200 arrested as clashes took place among police, AL activists and BNP-Jamaat men in different parts of the country.
In Chittagong, at least 30 people, including some cops and reporters, were injured in a clash between 20-party activists and police at Nur Ahmed road in the city during a rally.
Fifteen petrol bombs were also recovered from under a truck which was being used as the podium of the rally, police said.
In Narayanganj, at least 20 people, including 10 with bullets, were injured in a clash between the activists of BNP and police in Bandar upazila in the morning.
In Satkhira, police arrested 50 BNP and Jamaat-Shibir activists from different parts of the district.
In Comilla, police during an overnight drives in different parts of the district arrested 21 activists of BNP and Jamaat-Shibir.
In Bhola, at least 30 people were injured in sporadic clashes among BNP, Awami League and police in different parts of the district throughout the day.
Yakub Shah Jewel, 28, a local leader of Swechchashebak Dal, received bullet injuries during the incident.
Several vehicles were vandalized and a number of crude bombs were blasted at Bangla School intersection in the morning.
In Pabna, at least 15 people were injured in a clash between the activists of Awami League and BNP at Indara Patti intersection in the city. At least 10-12 crude bombs were exploded and five vehicles vandalised during the incident.
In Khagrachhari, at least 15 people were injured in a triangular clash involving BNP, Awami League and police in different parts of the district town.
In Sunamganj, at least 10 people were injured in a clash between the activists of Awami League and BNP-led 20-party alliance at Old Court in the town.
In Bandarban, at least 15 people were injured a clash between Awami League and BNP activists at VIP road in front of Awami League office in the town.
In Laxmipur, police arrested 29 people, including Laxmipur municipality unit BNP general secretary Nizam Uddin Bhuiya, from different parts of the district.
In Sylhet, police arrested 46 activists of Jamaat-Shiibir men from several parts of the city. The Jamaat-Shibir men also vandalised some vehicles from a procession at Kazitula in the city.
In Rajshahi, Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) recovered 10 Molotov cocktails (petrol bomb) and 24 crude bombs from beside a graveyard near Rajshahi University early Monday.
Besides, over 150 people injured and 68 people arrested in separate clashes in Patuakhali, Rajshahi, Jhenidah, Panchagarh, Brahmanbaria, Sirajganj, Moulvibazar, Khulna, Sylhet and Sunamganj districts.
