"The next election will be held under Sheikh Hasina…there’s no alternative to it," he told a mammoth public rally at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the city.
The ruling party organized the rally marking the Homecoming Day of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Hasina, also the President of Awami League, was the chief guest at the rally held with AL Presidium member and Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury in the chair.
Asserting that the next general election will be held under Sheikh Hasina, Ashraf said BNP could boycott that election, too. "If you (Khaleda) boycott the election once again, there’ll be no existence of your party," he said.
About the unopposed election of some MPs in the last general election, Ashraf said the elected MPs are not responsible for that. "Did the MPs ask them (BNP) not to participate in the election? Had those MPs restricted them (from participating in the polls)?" he questioned.
The Awami League leader said they (BNP) had decided on their own not to participate in the election.
Ashraf aid an election is not a Milad or a picnic party that people would be invited to participate in it. "If you’re a political party it’s your duty to participate in the election. Now you’ll have to accept your fault," he said.
He also criticized a section of newspapers for publishing such news that portrait that the government did not allow Khaleda Zia for participating in the election.
The AL general secretary said a couple of days back, one top pro-BNP intellectual wrote in a newspaper that Khaleda Zia has the preparation to participate in the election under the Sheikh Hasina-led government. "Why this intellectual hadn’t given the tip to Khaleda Zia before," he questioned.
Ashraf urged the Awami League activists and followers to remain vigil and get united to face any situation. "BNP is an evil party…it can unleash any evil deed anytime. That’s why I’m requesting you to be cautious. Let get united and make the party stronger," he said.
