The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) on Tuesday approved six development projects involving Tk 1,031.67 crore, including one to set up a new dual gauge rail line on Dhaka-Narayanganj section with Tk 378.66 crore.
The approval came from the 18th Ecnec meeting of the current fiscal year held at the NEC conference room with Ecnec chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said a total of six projects were approved today. "Of the total project cost, Tk 695.62 crore will come from the national exchequer while the rest of Tk 336.05 crore from project assistance.”
Of the six projects, he said, two are new while four are revised ones.
State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan was present at the briefing.
Under the new dual gauge rail line on Dhaka-Narayanganj project, a 21.50-km long dual gauge rail line would be set up in parallel with the existing meter-gauge rail line.
Of the total project cost of Tk 378.66 crore, the Planning Minister said, the government would provide Tk 129.11 crore while the Japanese government the rest of Tk 249.55 crore as grant. The Ministry of Railways will implement the project by June 2017.
Once the project is implemented, the Planning Minister said, 76 trains would be able to carry some 93,000 passengers on this busy railway route a day.
He also hoped that this dual gauge rail line would ease the transportation of goods and passengers as well as improve the services.
Mustafa Kamal said the present government attaches due importance to railway communication since it is an economic way of transportation.
The Ecnec meeting gave nod to another project titled 'Construction of Labour Tower' with Tk 63.06 crore under which a 25-storey Labour Tower would be set up at city's Syed Shaheed Nazrul Islam Avenue on 20 decimals of land, which would also be the tallest government building to be implemented by the Ministry of Labour and Employment by December 2017.
The Planning Minister said the building would have a five-storey parking facility alongside some common facilities like hall rooms.
The other projects approved at the meeting are Development of Pahartali Workshop, 1st revised with Tk 217.89 crore, construction of three PC Girder Bridges on Sirajganj-Kazipur-Dhunat road (Shaluabhita, Paikortoli and Ghorachara) and construction of super structures of the existing three Bailey bridges (Noilsapara, Fakirtala and Sonamukhi), 1st revised with Tk 49.47 crore, Technology Development of generating solar power with low cost, 1st revised with Tk 27.78 crore, and establishment of 11 secondary schools and six colleges at Dhaka Metropolis, 2nd revised with Tk 294.81 crore.
